Weekend at Harrietville Oct 13, 2012 “The Quiet Brother” Harrietville Community Centre Australasian Art & Stageworks is proud to present an adaptation of the play, “The Quiet Brother” by Ivy Mak. It was written in 2011 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the infamous anti-Chinese attacks on the Burrangong goldfields of Lambing Flat NSW. It is an intimate portrayal of a Chinese family’s struggle in the aftermath of the Lambing Flat Riots of 1861. However, the story could quite easily be set in North-east Victoria following the Buckland Valley Riots of 1857. “The Quiet Brother” is dedicated to the early Chinese, who were subjected to racist taunts, attacks and discriminatory policies, and more often than not suffered in silence. It is as much about the domestic experience of a migrant family as it is about Australia’s rich and multicultural history.
